What does is really mean to support local?
For me, it means putting in a little extra work to find everything I need within my own community. It means actually stopping to look around, and SEE my surroundings.
It means buying gifts from local retailers, it means eating at local cafes and restaurants. It means scouting out community farmers markets and buying local produce. It means interacting with other small businesses and artists, attending art + craft sales, and building each other up. It means participating in community events. And sure if I can’t find what I need here, it means hunting for quality products in the next town.
I come from a small town in central Alberta, I work at a small business retailer, and live as a working artist, the motto #loveyourlocal has truly been something I’ve been regularly practicing and encouraging. When people come together, and support their community – that is the magic happens.
I wanted to challenge you to #loveyourlocal ! Enjoy your surroundings! Take a nice wintery walk through the park, check out all the Christmas lights, peek inside a little shop you’ve never been in before. Donate a few dollars to the Food Bank every time you pick up groceries (it’s seriously easy and you won’t even notice). Make a plan to do as much shopping as possible in YOUR local area. Share your local recommendations with everyone. Bring your neighbor some homemade cookies or shovel the snow off their sidewalk. Love your community. Be proud of your community and welcome everyone in with all the goodness you can muster. This time of year is really about one thing: coming together and spreading the love, while braving whatever winter throw at us!
Again, especially at a time like this in the world, be open to the folks in your community. Making others feel truly welcomed might just be the best gift you can give this season. ❤
